Peninsula Early Learning is a place of wonder, laughter, joy, friendship and whānau.

We allow children to expand their horizons through both play and structured learning experiences based on the national ECE curriculum Te Whāriki, which we believe sets the children on a pathway for lifelong learning.

Learning through nature

Children need to be outside. They need to explore, get dirty and find things - they need to have fun!

Our philosophy is underpinned by the belief that learning during the early years is characterised by a child’s innate drive to explore and discover. It is in this stage of early childhood education that children cultivate their sense of affection and connection toward the natural world and their perception of the needs of other creatures. We focus on encouraging children to explore and experience their local environment with the aim of developing a sense of wonder and sense of their place and time.

Structured learning

Our tamariki meet each day and focus on small group activities and group projects to support essential skills as they transition on to school.

Our preschool programme is built around structured learning times / a daily routine, and includes:

  • Early literacy and numeracy e.g. independent and teacher-led reading sessions, and pre-writing development

  • Science and mathematics e.g. exploring science and maths in nature and taking part in baking activities

  • Music and movement e.g. dance and weekly nature walks

  • Visual arts

  • Dramatic play

  • School preparedness e.g. self-management and developing independence by putting away equipment/belongings, mat time, children sharing, taking turns etc.

Connect with us on Facebook for regular updates on what our tamariki have been up to.

I’ve never met a child who was not interested in nature… I mean just the simplest thing, a 5 year old turning over a stone and seeing a slug, you know, and says, ‘What a treasure!’ You know, ‘Well how does it live and what are those things on the front?’ Kids love it. Kids understand the natural world…
